Special Olympics I was fortunate enough to be involved with the Special Olympics program and had the opportunity to volunteer and coach people with intellectual disabilities at the state basketball tournament. This opportunity opened my eyes to a world of unbelievable compassion and heart and let me work with amazing people who were so grateful just to get to be playing the sport and doing something that they love while never feeling for a second, that they were any different than anybody else. Meals On Wheels I, along with fellow Century21 co-workers, deliver meals for the Senior Citizen Center on the 1st & 3rd Monday of every month. This is a program where I got to be involved with the elderly who in many cases are unable to completely care for themselves anymore. I have grown so much from this experience because after many visits, I have started to develop relationships with many of the individuals and have learned so much from their stories of their diverse backgrounds and cultural upbringings and experiences. Adapted Physical Education Class I am currently placed in my practicum where I have the opportunity to work in an adapted physical education environment. This class has been formed to specifically focus on activities and skills that have been adapted to those individuals with special needs. I have already learned and unbelievable amount of knowledge and advice for how to incorporate adaptive methods in my future classroom as a physical education teacher. It is so critical to remember that individuals with special needs need just as much physical activity and stimulation to maintain a healthy mental and physical state.
